Improving Touchscreen Typing Using Back-of-Device Grip Interactions

چکیده

Typing on touchscreen keyboards is inherently inaccurate as users tend to touch locations offset from their intended target. Offsets are user-specific and can further differ for a given user between postures (left-hand, right-hand, indexfinger or two-thumb typing). On the other hand, back-ofdevice interaction has been used to predict screen touches on randomised abstract targets. We propose a new approach where unique offset models are learned for each posture and back-of-device is used to predict posture. Offset models are learned using linear regression while classification is achieved through SVMs and GPs. The models lead to significant improvements in typing accuracy. We show that modelling thumbs within two-thumb typing as separate postures can further improve accuracy. Posture misclassifications, however, can introduce errors in the model. This can be alleviated by weighted averaging of offsets based on probabilities from a probabilistic classifier GP.

15 Touchscreen Software Keyboard for Finger Typing

Touchscreen interfaces have attracted attention in recent years because their flexibility, functionality, and usability for design have become better known. They have been used in public-use terminals such as automated teller machines, ticket machines, and information kiosks. Recently, they are used for small, mobile device interfaces such as Apple’s iPhone and iPod touch (Apple Inc., 2006). Fu...

Fingers’ Range and Comfortable Area for One-Handed Smartphone Interaction Beyond the Touchscreen

Previous research and recent smartphone development presented a wide range of input controls beyond the touchscreen. Fingerprint scanners, silent switches, and Back-of-Device (BoD) touch panels offer additional ways to perform input. However, with the increasing amount of input controls on the device, unintentional input or limited reachability can hinder interaction. In a one-handed scenario, ...

Gestyboard BackTouch 1.0: Two-Handed Backside Blind-Typing on Mobile Touch-Sensitive Surfaces

This paper presents a new and innovative gesture-based textinput concept designed for high-performance blind-typing on mobile devices with a touch-sensitive surface on their back-side. This concept is based on the Gestyboard concept which has been developed by the Technische Universität München for stationary use on larger multi-touch devices like tabletop surfaces. Our new mobile concept enabl...

Improving Touchscreen Keyboards: Design Issues and a Comparison with Other Devices

This study explored touchscreen keyboards using high precision touchscreen strategies. Phase one evaluated three possible monitor positions: 30, 45, and 75 degrees from horizontal. Results indicate that the 75 degree angle, approximately the standard monitor position, resulted in more fatigue and lower preference ratings. Phase two collected touch bias and key size data for the 30 degree angle....
